In the Arena: Building Silicon Beach

Today I want to share something a little more personal.

Not a highlight reel.

Not a polished announcement.

Just the honest truth about what it feels like to build Silicon Beach — and what it really means to create something from nothing.

Because building an innovative startup… building a venture studio… building a community… is not easy.

It’s exciting, yes.

It’s meaningful, yes.

But it’s also hard.

When people hear the words “startup ecosystem” or “venture studio,” they often picture momentum, big wins, and overnight success.

But what they don’t see are the moments behind the scenes.

The long days where progress feels invisible.

The late nights where you’re questioning every decision.

The uncertainty of building something new without a roadmap.

Hosting networking events.

Organizing pitch nights.

Bringing founders and investors into the same room.

Trying to spark something that hasn’t existed here before.

It takes everything.

And along the way, you get feedback.

Some people give you the “that a boy.”

They encourage you. They remind you why you started.

But if I’m being honest…

There are also others.

People who offer negativity disguised as “constructive criticism.”

People who take shots from the sidelines.

People who are quick to point out what you should do… while never actually building anything themselves.

And I’ve had to learn something important:

You can’t carry every comment.

You can’t let every voice steer the ship.

Because at the end of the day…

I keep coming back to Theodore Roosevelt’s words:

"It is not the critic who counts… the credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena."

That’s what this journey is.

The arena.

Entrepreneurship isn’t clean.

It isn’t comfortable.

It isn’t certain.

It’s showing up anyway.

It’s taking hits.

It’s falling down.

It’s getting back up.

It’s being willing to be seen trying.

And here’s the truth:

If people are throwing stones from the sidelines…if the critics are watching closely…

It usually means you’re onto something.

Because no one wastes energy attacking something that doesn’t matter.

So to those in the arena with me — the founders, the builders, the dreamers, the ones taking the risk…

I salute you.

And to those watching from the sidelines, taking shots…

Thank you too.

You remind us that we must be moving forward.

Silicon Beach is still being built.

This is still the beginning.

But what we’re creating is bigger than one person.

It’s a community.

A home for innovation.

A launchpad for founders.

A place where ideas turn into companies.

Where connections turn into momentum.

Where people stop waiting for opportunity and start building it.

So if you’re someone who wants to create…

If you’re someone with a vision…

If you’re tired of standing on the sidelines and ready to step into the arena…

I want you to join us.

Come to a Silicon Beach event.

Step into the room.

Meet the founders.

Pitch the idea.

Build the company.

This community is for people who are doing the work.

And we’re just getting started.

Let’s keep building.

Welcome to Silicon Beach, and please join me in the ARENA!Bh.

"Whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood." I learned this - it was drilled into us - at the Air Force Academy. I recently learned that they removed that portion of the quote from Contrails, the book each new cadet carries and memorizes. I found that odd, as that neuters the meaning. As though we don't want people to know that to strive is dirty, sweaty, and sometimes bloody...

I'll be right there beside you.
